Camp Michitanki
Camp Michitanki was established in 2003. It is an annual one-week resident
camp program for children who have received an organ transplant. Its name
is derived from "Michigan Transplant Kids" and is currently held
in Oscoda, MI at the YMCA camp Nissokone. It is fostered by and administered
through the tireless effort and involvement of the University of Michigan
Transplant Center.
Camp Michitanki is a one week Summer camp created for the sole purpose of
providing an exciting experience for children ages 7-15 that have had organ
transplants. Campers spend 7 days in August, participating in a variety
of outdoor/indoor activities and can experience the opportunity to interact
with other children who have had transplants in a non-medical setting. The
camp is completely staffed by a community of volunteers and healthcare professionals
who are experienced in working with children and specifically caring for
transplant kids. Boys and girls are organized by age and assigned cabin
groups for the week.
CAMP MICHITANKI'S MISSION STATEMENT
We believe that every child who has had an organ transplant should be able
to have a camping experience. Children who have been very sick and have
survived because they received a heart, lung, liver, small bowel or kidney
transplant have obstacles that are different than those of other kids. We
believe that transplant recipient kids should be exposed to an environment
that allows participation in every activity, fosters relationships with
kids who have overcome similar medical hurdles, and encourages personal
growth through supervised physical and social challenges.
CAMP MICHITANKI'S PURPOSE
The purpose of Camp Michitanki is to facilitate personal development in
a safe and fun environment. The four major goals of camp are:
(1) To assist campers by constructively incorporating post-transplant lifestyles
into their self-concepts and attitudes.
(2) To nurture self-confidence and foster pride, hope and personal growth.
(3) To provide an opportunity to establish peer relationships with the transplant
community.
(4) To empower and motivate children who have received an organ transplant
to seek a life of freedom and independence that is not limited by their
chronic condition.
Camp Michitanki seeks to achieve these goals in an atmosphere of mutual
respect and support for children from diverse ethnic, racial, economic,
religious and geographic backgrounds.
